Taylor Nixon: From Filmmaking to Photography - Building Stories That Connect

By Narrative Team

Taylor Nixon’s creative journey has always been driven by a love for storytelling that connects people.

Now, as Narrative’s new Photographer Relationship Manager, he’s connecting with the creative community in a whole new way. In this conversation with Kyle Wilson, Taylor dives into his career path, the balance between passion projects and professional work, and the importance of finding creative fulfillment. From filming music videos to launching community projects, Taylor shares how he stays inspired and what he’s working on next.

A Creative Path Built on Storytelling

Beginning his career working predominantly in the Art and Production Department, Taylor has since moved into full-time work as a Music Video and Commercial Director. Chasing his passion for music and filmmaking across Aotearoa, Australia, and beyond, he’s often found himself crammed into tour vans or even setting fire to gold pianos — all for the sake of the shot.

Among many of the works Taylor has created, his 2022 Web Series pilot “Roadie” won Best Pilot twice on its festival run. In 2023, he directed five music videos backed by NZ On Air, and in 2024 his short film TOW won the top prize of Best Aotearoa Project at the VisionFeast Film Festival. Even more impressive? All of it was self-funded.

Young but relentlessly eager to learn and grow his craft, Taylor is always pushing the bounds of what’s possible and creating work that connects.

Interview Highlights

You’ve had quite a varied career in the creative world, from filmmaking to photography. Did you have a plan in your creative timeline?

What got me into all this was my love for writing. I've been writing scripts or stories since I was about 10. I even ran a comic book sale at school that got shut down by the teachers, but we made a bit of money. But basically, I was pulled into the creative industry by my love for writing. The long-term goal is to create stories that connect people, whether that be TV shows or feature work. Narrative definitely feeds into that.

Taylor goes on to share how his creativity spans multiple outlets — from filmmaking and photography to drawing, marketing, and fashion editorials. He reflects on the challenges of burnout, the power of creating “just for yourself,” and how his project Proud Dad became a community-building tool that lifted up other creatives.

Now, stepping into his new role at Narrative, Taylor is passionate about supporting photographers and building a community where storytelling thrives.

The Tools That Fuel Creativity

As Taylor explains, creativity is about connection. But just like filmmakers need the right cameras, photographers need the right tools to manage their workflow.

That’s where Narrative comes in.
