The best Evoto alternatives for AI photo culling are Narrative, Aftershoot, Imagen and Photo Mechanic. We built Narrative for photographers who want AI to sort and rank their images while they make every final selection themselves.

This comparison is on Narrative's own site, so you know where we stand. Below, we put Narrative next to each alternative on culling, editing, pricing and fit. Everything we say about the other products comes from what each company publishes about itself.

Why photographers look for Evoto alternatives

Evoto makes AI-powered products for professional photographers. Evoto says more than 1.2 million photographers use its products in more than 200 countries. It has three products: Evoto Photo Editor, Evoto Instant and Evoto Video. Evoto Instant is aimed at wedding and event photographers. The Evoto App supports wired and wireless tethered shooting, so you can review and edit photos during a live session. Evoto also connects to Lightroom Classic, and it states ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certification.

Evoto charges for premium features with credits. Basic colour adjustments, cropping and file management are free, and welcome credits let you test the rest. If you're looking at Evoto competitors, it's usually for one of two reasons. You want a tool built around selection first, or you want a flat price that doesn't change with the size of the shoot.

Narrative: a culling workflow that assists your creative decision-making

After every shoot comes the same job. Thousands of frames, a deadline, and somewhere in there, the images that matter. We built Narrative to take on the repetitive part of that job. Narrative sorts, ranks and edits images, so the hours you'd spend on sorting go back into the decisions only you can make.

The AI in Narrative clears the path so it's easy for you to make the call. Photographers choose Narrative because the final selection stays theirs, and because the price stays flat. Narrative's Premium plan ($40 a month billed yearly) covers up to two users and includes Personal AI Presets (one colour, one black and white) and basic editing. Narrative Ultra costs $60 a month and includes five Personal AI Presets and four users. For every plan, use is unlimited. You never pay extra for a busy month.

Aftershoot: AI-led post production workflow (local)

Aftershoot targets wedding, school, event and portrait photographers who process thousands of images per shoot. Aftershoot checks every frame against more than 30 technical factors and groups duplicates. You review the results in Survey Mode, which shows up to 16 images side by side, or in Grid, Loupe or Spray Can. The desktop app runs on Windows and macOS, processes files locally, works offline after installation and supports RAW, JPEG and TIFF.

Aftershoot offers both AI-automated and AI-assisted culling, inside a product that runs from culling through delivery. Photographers who want the AI to handle the whole selection process will lean towards Aftershoot. We built Narrative for photographers who want their selects to reflect their own vision.

Imagen: AI-led post production workflow (cloud)

Imagen is a cloud-based AI service for professional photographers. Its AI Profile predicts your editing style and applies it to each photo. Imagen offers ready-made profiles for real estate, school and sports work, supports Lightroom Classic and publishes to Pic-Time galleries. Imagen stores customer data mainly in AWS US East and says it does not currently hold ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification. Because Imagen runs in the cloud, your images get uploaded. Photographers working under NDA or in remote locations should weigh that.

Photo Mechanic: Industry-standard for manual culling

Photo Mechanic, from Camera Bits, is built for professionals on tight deadlines. Photo Mechanic adds copyright and credit details on ingest. It inserts long captions through Code Replacements, applies GPS logs to add location names, and uploads directly to services such as PhotoShelter and SmugMug. It runs locally, and Camera Bits says it does not use your images to train AI. Licences cover one user on up to two computers, and you can buy one outright.

Pricing and value at different shooting volumes

The pricing model matters more than the headline number. Imagen's Pay-as-you-go plan and Evoto's credit system both scale with use, so a heavy wedding season costs more. Narrative and Aftershoot charge flat rates so it's easier to plan how much return on investment you are getting from the get-go. Photo Mechanic is the one option you can own outright with a perpetual licence.

Where each tool sits in your photography workflow

Each tool takes on a different part of the job. Photo Mechanic covers ingest, captioning and delivery. Evoto covers retouching and live tethered sessions. Aftershoot and Imagen extend from culling into editing. Narrative focuses on selection and AI preset editing for faster handover to editing work Lightroom or Capture One. In Aftershoot's 2025 survey of AI-adopter photographers, 81% reported a better work-life balance. Time saved on sorting is time you get back.

Editing quality and keeping your own style

No tool makes your edits better than your eye does. Good editing tools apply your look consistently, so you start your adjustments closer to where you'd finish. Aftershoot trains profiles on your past edits and can import them from Lightroom or Capture One. Imagen predicts your style from an AI Profile. Narrative gives you Personal AI Presets for colour and black and white. In every case, the edits you check by hand are the ones that matter most.

Narrative vs Aftershoot vs Photo Mechanic

These three get compared most often. Photo Mechanic is a fast viewer and metadata tool for deadline work. Aftershoot is a full pipeline with automated or assisted culling. Narrative is AI-assisted selection and editing at a flat price, built for photographers who want to keep authorship of every select.

Which tool fits which photographer

Wedding and event photographers

Narrative and Aftershoot both suit high-count shoots on flat pricing. Evoto Instant targets live event review. Choose Narrative if you want to keep control of your selection.

Portrait studios

Narrative's two- and four-user plans suit small studios. Evoto's focus is on retouching.

Landscape and travel photographers

Photo Mechanic's GPS and location metadata tools suit travel work. Narrative takes on the culling after long trips.

High-volume professionals

Flat-rate plans from Narrative and Aftershoot keep costs predictable. Imagen's Business plan covers multiple photographers under one account.

Why we recommend Narrative

Culling is not why you picked up a camera. We built Narrative to take the repetitive labour off your desk, at a flat price, without taking the decision away from you. Your instinct, backed by AI.
