Narrative and FilterPixel both put AI to work on large shoots, but they divide the labour differently. We built Narrative so AI ranks and flags while you make every call. FilterPixel centres on genre-based DeepCull selections.
After every shoot you face the same job. Thousands of images, a tight deadline, and somewhere in there are the shots that matter. This is Narrative's own comparison, so we're open about where we stand. Below we explain how the two tools differ, where we think Narrative wins, and where FilterPixel is built for a different need.
What you care about | Narrative | FilterPixel |

Core approach | Fast local RAW ingestion, AI-assisted culling and personalised style editing | AI culling and editing software for high-volume photographers |

Manual culling means opening every frame, checking focus, checking eyes, and comparing near-duplicates one by one. On a wedding or a conference, that repetitive checking eats hours before any real creative decision begins.
AI culling takes on the repetitive part. Narrative's AI First Pass handles the initial sort. Its focus quality scoring tells you which frames are soft, and you decide what goes. Narrative never quietly throws images away on your behalf. AI for your tasks. Not your craft.
FilterPixel's Basic Cull does technical filtering on blur, focus, expressions and composition. DeepCull evaluates photos by genre and explains each selection. FilterPixel's Review Mode keeps every image rather than deleting any.
We don't publish stopwatch numbers here, because results depend on your computer, your files and your shoot. What we can show you is where each tool saves time.
Narrative starts with fast local RAW ingestion, so you start reviewing on your own machine right away. On Standard and Premium, Scenes View lets you move through a shoot by moment instead of frame by frame. The Close-ups Panel shows faces without zooming each image. Filters by First Pass assessment and focus score bring the strongest frames to the top.
FilterPixel speeds things up with Magic Number, where you set how many selects you want. DeepCull handles up to 5,500 photos per shoot. FilterPixel runs its AI culling on lightweight, low-resolution derivatives rather than your full-resolution originals.
In our view, AI is most dependable on technical questions: is it sharp, are the eyes open, is it a duplicate. It can't know which glance between two people carries the story. The best images are felt. Not calculated.
We designed Narrative around that split. Eye and focus assessments give you clarity on the technical side, and the ranking stays open to your judgement. FilterPixel approaches trust by attaching a score and a reason to every DeepCull selection, with genre modes for conference, sports, concert and wedding work.
Lite: $10/month billed annually or $15 monthly. 1 user, basic culling. Eye and focus assessments show on hover only. No Scenes View, Close-ups Panel, rank ordering, assessment or focus filters, or Face Compare.
Standard: $20/month billed annually or $29 monthly. 1 user, advanced AI culling, core and artist AI Presets, straightening, rotating and cropping.
Premium: $40/month billed annually or $59 monthly. Up to 2 users, everything in Standard, plus Personal AI Presets (one colour, one black and white).
FilterPixel offers a free trial with no credit card required. Extra DeepCull shoots are a one-time purchase of $7.99 each. The Studio plan supports up to five team seats.
Narrative is a monthly or yearly subscription, so you budget a known amount. Standard billed annually is $240 a year, which works out to $6 per shoot across 40 shoots. With FilterPixel, add $7.99 for each extra DeepCull shoot beyond what your plan includes. For a busy season, that per-shoot line is the number to watch.
Narrative applies AI Presets inside Narrative before your images ship to Adobe Lightroom, so Lightroom becomes the place you finish, not where you start. Narrative also works with Adobe Photoshop. On Premium, Personal AI Presets carry your own look.
FilterPixel offers AI editing profiles built by expert photographers, and it can learn your style from an edited Lightroom catalog. It exports to Lightroom, Capture One and Photo Mechanic, so photographers who edit in Capture One or cull in Photo Mechanic will lean that way.
You want AI to sort and rank while you keep every decision.
You edit in Lightroom or Photoshop and want your look applied before export.
You prefer a set subscription price over buying shoots one at a time.
You work alone or with one other editor.
FilterPixel targets high-volume wedding, event, sports, school and corporate photographers, and reports more than 14,000 event photographers using it. Studios of three to five editors who need a shared team dashboard, or anyone exporting to Capture One, will find FilterPixel built around those needs.
No single tool is the standard. The common pattern for high-volume work is ingest, an AI-assisted first pass, a human review of what's left, then editing in Lightroom. Narrative keeps that whole sequence in one place, from local RAW ingestion through AI Presets to Lightroom.
When you read reviews, check which plan the reviewer used. Narrative's Lite plan leaves out the advanced culling tools, so a Lite review won't show Scenes View or Face Compare. Also note the genre they shoot and where they edit, because those two details shape the experience more than any feature list.
Cull right after ingest, while you still remember the shoot.
Let the AI first pass flag technical misses, then review those flags instead of every frame.
Work by scene rather than by individual frame.
Compare faces side by side for group shots before picking one.
Decide how many images you'll deliver before you start.
Apply your look before export so Lightroom time goes to finishing.
We recommend Narrative for photographers who want speed without surrender. Narrative takes on the sorting, ranking and first edit. You keep the selection, the judgement and the authorship. FilterPixel is built around genre-based DeepCull and multi-seat studios. If your priority is moving fast while staying in control of every image, Narrative is the tool we built for you.
