A Moment with Nirav Patel

Taylor from the team had the opportunity to sit down with Nirav Patel, our esteemed judge for the "Portrait: Interesting Perspective" category, sponsored by VSCO, to hear his thoughts on what makes a compelling portrait, recent industry trends, and the value of entering photography awards.

There's a breathlessness that Nirav's work gives me that only few pieces of Art evoke. Its that gut punch, the sensation that you're seeing something your eyes just can't bear to look away from.

Nirav is a deeply celebrated fine art portrait and editorial photographer based in San Fransico. His work is a masterclass in the use of natural light and its ability to capture the quiet, intimate moments of deep, lasting human connection. And his talent has not gone unnoticed; early in his career, he was named one of Rangefinder magazine's "30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography," with his photos displayed in a long list of fantastic publications.

Nirav's approach is often described as a blend of fine art and documentary, and I'd be an advocate for that statement - he creates images that are both honest and artistically crafted, and its with great honour we have his talent looking after the Portrait: Interesting Perspective category.

I sent him a few questions on his craft, and here's what he had to say:

What do you look for in a great photo for the Portrait: Interesting Perspective category?

Nirav Patel: An interesting perspective is less about using tricks and more about how the photographer invites us to see someone in a new way.

It happens when the angle, the composition, or the way the subject is framed makes us pause and feel something deeper about who they are.

A great portrait should carry both intention and a touch of surprise.

It should reveal a truth that we may not have noticed otherwise, and that is what makes it unforgettable.

What trends or styles have you seen shift or change in the last couple of years?

Nirav Patel: There has been a clear shift toward authenticity in portraiture.

Photographers are leaning into honesty and imperfection… using natural light, allowing motion blur, embracing emotion, and even including moments that once would have been considered outtakes.

There is also a blending of editorial and documentary approaches, where images feel both crafted and real at the same time. People are seeking that balance: the beauty of artistry grounded in genuine human connection.

Why do you think it’s a good idea for photographers to enter awards like this?

Nirav Patel:  Entering awards is less about competing and more about growing.

It gives you the chance to step back, reflect on your work, and consider how your vision resonates outside of your usual circles. It encourages you to be intentional about what you want to say with your images.

Awards also create community by connecting us with photographers who are experimenting and pushing boundaries.

Most of all, they celebrate the power of storytelling through photography. The process of entering itself can reignite your passion and remind you why you create.
